Week Five

So Mondays were playing games. Saturday we were in Cleveland, TN had to go to Cleveland State to go to his his first showcase where coaches were available. So coaches really can't talk to 9th and 10th graders yet in baseball, so they just observe and put people on their watch list and things like that can talk to the coaches a little bit.

2:37 So it was pretty cool though. It was. But he hadn't picked the bat up in two months. Hey, just go play, you know what I'm saying? And it was a lot more relaxed than I thought it would be for him because he just went and played and he, you know, he did everything the right way. So that was cool. But it was hot. I thought I was going to pass out. I was definitely stealing Gatorades out of people's coolers. If you see, if you got a cooler and it's got Gatorade and water in it and I'm around, I'm drinking it. I'd rather drink your Gatorade and fall out. So I was, I was. I'm going to.

4:00 That was probably the best part of the week because the weekend got here and it and it wasn't as pretty as I wanted it to be. Two big L's in fantasy football. Obviously we we know what happened on Saturday, you know, the Colts won, but looking at who they're playing, that didn't really give me a whole lot of faith. So it could get worse for you. You can be a Titans fan and Will Levis can be 1/4. At least I ain't got Will Levis, man. That Jesus Christ, man, I can't, dude. I can't. I can't win for losing. It's pitiful. My high school team lost, my college team lost, and my pro team lost. I'm about to start picking different teams, man. We got to. Do some man, Oh man, oh man.

4:43 But I know we got. Behind you, my college team lost my pro team, my fantasy team is the only thing keeping me happy. I'm three and O and fresh in the league right now. Well, that's pretty good. That's pretty good. All I got. Is I put out an all time low in fantasy? Oh yeah, man. Didn't break y'all in the same league. Yeah, yeah, he. Didn't break 60. I did not break 60. All time low. You playing that thing like I do. I had people. I had people in that was hurt for the season, all type of stuff. They're like, hey man, you're supposed to change people out. I ain't. I don't play. Ain't got time? I ain't got. No time. I'm getting screwed by the auto sub. It's not working for me, but this is another league. I I had a legitimate starting lineup and just nobody did anything.

5:28 Hold on, hold on. A Titan put up a zero. He played like 60 some snaps and put up a 0. Hold on. It could be worse. Though. I mean y'all got to win week 1 though. Yeah, I'm going to say they beat us. They beat us. They beat the Titans, so again, I I can't handle it bad. I'm I'm just tired of it. But I know we got a lot to unwrap here. It's going to be a great night, as great as we can make it after a loss. Everybody seen the game, they know we lost. But I wanted to start and again, I told y'all I was going to bring something on y'all. So I want to start and I want to ask y'all a couple of questions. They're going to go with Curtis first. Oh God.

6:13 We're just going, we're just going to run down the offense and the defense because I'm trying to. I've seen a lot of people putting blame or saying, oh, it's a lot of people to blame. But whenever I asked like who's the blame? Who do y'all think what needs to be fixed? I can't get a straight answer. So why not start it here? Did our running backroom do enough to win the game? Our running backroom did more than enough to win the game. OK, more running back. Brian, would you agree? I agree. OK. Did our quarterback room do enough to win the game? No, no. Not this way. Did our offensive line do enough to win the game? No.

6:56 That's that, that that. See kind of crazy question you know, given. Everything given, everything else that that we're putting together here, they did not do enough. OK, Curtis, what you say? You you thinking something? See, I see. I'm thinking because the reality is a Shelton sent me all the numbers. Shelton's not here. This is this. Is why I wanted to break it down. So yeah, go ahead. So you go across the line and look, a handful of guys on that line had very good games, very good games. One was the best tackle in the country per PFF. Couple of our interior guys had very good games.

7:39 Then a couple guys, it didn't have so great games, so would you? But it's all one unit. Right. In that case, Brian, you play tally, you play tight end. I think the line did enough to win the game. I think a couple of people on the line didn't do to win the game. There you go, collecting unit. You start fairly. Yeah. Now, if you start looking at why is this person playing over this person, possibly, I don't know. So then, now let's go wide receiver room. Did the wide receiver room do enough to win the game? Seeing a couple times I saw some guys running free the ball didn't get there. I mean, I got to say they did.

8:23 Tidy in Rome. From a catching perspective, yes. Blocking God No, God no. They they, they threw some atrocious blocks. It's, it's again, it's the inconsistency. And I think that's the thing that's a lot frustrating. I think that's why this exercise becomes hard sometimes when we talk about you, they do enough because there are moments when they did really well. Then they're moments where you just scratch your head like, is that even the same player? Like you think about like Benji, Benji through some hell, hell of a good blocks on outside zone, split zone, things like that. But there were a couple. Others where he he's olaying and he's doing pretty, pretty poorly in pass pro.

9:09 So it's like it's it's like it's it's incomplete. But I mean, in this instance, in this particular game, I'm going to say a no. So now we're going to go to defensive side of the ball. OK, defensive line. Did they do enough to win the game? Yes. Yep, Brian, You think so? All right, linebackers. Did they do enough to win the game? Linebackers is a lot like offensive lineman. Yeah. Some guys had great games. I I, I think cumulatively. No, no. Cumulatively, no, because there were too many. Guys, I think, I think Brumfield had a pretty good game. Brumfield played solid. Woodson played good against the run, but Woodson's youth showed on some of those little fake pass plays because he stuck that head back inside and that flat was gone.

9:58 But overall they did not play good enough. OK, Safeties, no. Oh, we can do so do y'all want to do something and quarterbacks together, they don't do it separate, do it separate on safeties. Safeties did not do good enough. Jaylen Jones was in hell. That's all I would say. I. Agree. Most made mistakes too, Yeah, same way they were. They were making mistakes. Corners played good enough. OK, corners, corners that will play good enough. And I'm going to retract my statement too, looking at the chat and talking. That's why I wanted to do this to start the show off. I said line. I thought line did enough to win the game because I'm seeing at times when we needed them, they threw a block, they got somebody open, we scored.

10:40 But a lot of that does have to do with who we had running the ball. So I will go with I'm on, I'm going to change my opinion. Line as a as a collective. And the reason I'm changing this is because of the last question I'm asked as a collective line didn't do enough to win the game, so we'll go line didn't do enough to win the game. Who else did we say quarterback, quarterback room didn't do enough to win the game, linebackers, safeties. So that is the the four rooms that didn't do enough to win that game is am I getting that right? That's it. OK, last question. Then we can move on. Did the coaches as a whole, we ain't breaking them down. Did the coaches do enough to win the game? Not at all.

11:28 Not at all. Way too many ill prepared moments way too, especially that one play, that one little, whatever you want to call it, RPO play for the defense that they ran. I think, I think somebody wrote out there and what I've seen, it was done 7 times successfully. That little flats pass, no? Yeah. The the coaches didn't and the the bad thing is, and Brian, I'll let you in peace. To me, there have been no game this year that the coaches has had this team adequately prepared. Yeah, I. Agree now now I will give them their I will give them a little I will give them a little flowers.

12:11 They have made some impressive in game adjustments in game they they've gotten to the right points, but the whole thing is when teams now it's becoming something where teams know if they can get on us early, they can win the game. Yeah. We're, we're not designed to play from behind. We don't have the offensive line that can block for situations where we need to drop back and sling it. I don't think that we we've seen success with that. I think our quarterback plays better when he's comfortable and confident and, and that denotes getting quicker starts in games, getting him comfortable with the game plan, comfortable with his weapons, comfortable with the way the game's going. You know, I think we've seen that fairly consistently even going back to last year.

13:07 And then looking at the way the games have gone this year, When he's comfortable early, he looks like a very damn good quarterback. And when when he's not comfortable early, it's very uneven, right. Like you'll see him make some really good plays and then you'll see some head scratchers. Yeah. It's just when I look at stuff, man, the reason I ask that question is because I've seen so much stuff. You overanalyze stuff and you do want to be mad, and then you look at this and you look at that. It's so much stuff that goes into it. And I can see in the chat. How? It's split and I can see us trying to talk about it, how none of this stuff is easy. I'm not making any excuses for anybody, but I've seen somebody say it. You can't win or can't put it on the coaches.

13:48 The drone misses 2 touchdowns. That's very true. He overthrew his wide receivers, but you got A-65 receiver that we have not seen layout for a ball Steven Gosnell laid out for one. When you talk about people wanting to win and doing everything it takes to win, we haven't seen that from every player yet. And I'm not putting that on our wide receivers as well. I'm just saying when you get to a point where you'll do anything to win, then we can start saying this is the only thing that happened. It wasn't good. I want. To do 2 things right, I'm going to put this up talking about that RPOI can't blame that Omar for the RPO woods and it's on him. It's not on more. He can't make them execute on the field. But Yost, I love you dude.

14:32 We talk all the time. What is 8 for 9 for 100 plus yards? That is on the coach because if you're not sitting there adjusting to maybe put them in a zone concept or put them line them up further outside, that's on a coach or the coach to say, listen, you just stay with him. I don't care about to run. That's coaching on the sidelines. And, and, and if you look later, there was a correction to that because he did stay with the tight end later and you know, he turned it up and got the quarterback did turned it up, got like a 10 or 15 yard gain on a run where he kept it. So I mean, they, they did make some adjustment at some point in the game. But again, it's the same play. It's eight of nine.

15:14 I think it's a little bit of both, right. I think we could have been a little bit quicker with identifying that as a problem for us and, and, and making those adjustments a little bit quicker. I'll take a quarterback having to turn it up and run, then getting it to a tight end or way into their right route wide open in the flat, just being able to turn it up and in some cases with that wide receiver getting a little bit of a push there, having a having a big lane in the alley. So I, I think it's like I said, a little bit of both. I think you got to look at coaching and being a little bit quicker on that adjustment, but it it's still the players got to go out there and make the play. Yeah. And another thing too is did you look at is if you would have told me we held Cal Menunga Menungi, whatever his name is, under 100 yards, I think we win the game.

16:06 Hell yeah. Ever since you had Rutgers on the schedule, you thought this is what we have to do. We have to stop the run game, even the run game as a whole. I don't know what they had, what they have, 150 or something. 153 on 52 so they. Were I thought they would run for 300 yards easy, so I'm not saying that's an excuse, but if you prepare to play them a certain way that that's what's in their heads. You know what I'm saying, That they're they're the the kids that you have on the field are prepared to do this job. Now, it takes some time to get them. The coach can adjust so he can tell them to adjust, but it takes some time to get it to happen. And sometimes it just takes athleticism. Think about the last play, their last offensive play. I won't say last offensive play, but the play before they kick the field goal at the end, we were beat. Woodson was out of position, You know, he had duck down inside, but him wanting to win and him being athletic enough to read, you know, to to redirect and go and save a touchdown. First of all, that's a testament of to him. But also, I mean, sometimes players just got to they got to go through it, you know, and you got some young guys that's inexperienced.

17:27 You also got some old guys that are experienced and still screwing up. But you know, like it's a lot that went on in that game, man. And I understand the knee jerk reaction to be mad. I'm more pissed than probably anybody that watched the game and I didn't even watch the whole game. I had to go back and watch it, you know, but I expected to lose a game. I hate to say that I never want that to come out of my mouth. But last week if you go back and watch the show, I say y'all, I think it's going to be a close game and I just don't have the confidence that we can pull off a close game because of our coaches. So I wanted to start with that exercise just so we can get the juices flowing a little bit. I know we got a lot to get into, but that is that's what's been going through my mind since Saturday.

18:14 All of that. You know what I'm saying? And it's not a it's not a, let's say he did it. Let's say he did it. There's nobody that sits on Twitter. They can tell me exactly why we lost his game. And I want them to so I can be like, yeah, you're right. But everybody's saying fired. And this is another thing too. And then I'm going to get we can get started. I went, I didn't, I didn't. I didn't see the, I didn't see the J Lane fumble until yesterday. OK. I was watching, you know, condensed game a little bit. I, I got home about third quarter when I was texting, you know, so I watched from third quarter on, but I went back and and said, let me see this fumble, man, That's just a player making a play. Like, I didn't even know when his hand hit the ground and the ball bounces out.

18:59 I didn't know that that's a fumble. I thought, oh, he's down. No, the hand, any other part of your body can hit that man. Sometimes that's just hokey luck, I guess, you know what I'm saying. Do we really fire? Do we really fire the special teams coach for that play? Some of the other stuff maybe, but for that play, a player trying to make a play and just not getting down, I guess, yeah, I don't think cost that fumble, yeah. I I think that's a big problem that we see sometimes is that when we're emotional, we, we tie everything. Everything we see is indicative of of what our problem is in our head. So like we've got in our head, yes, Sue is a problem.

19:40 We've had special teams excuse. We have this. And we have we still you got. Together, yes, you do still definitely is done. And that's that's a discussion I think we'll have later. But you know, I think I said it earlier, sometimes you need to use a knife down a machete. That yes, you have said that. That has been one of your look. At the problems, we need to actually address the problems and cut out the problems, not take a machete to everything. Not not everything that goes wrong is necessarily. For every problem for every. Reason sometimes shit happens. For every reason that we love Jay Lane is why he fumble that ball. True a couple of weeks ago when he took one for a touchdown when people was all around.

If you watching the next day, that means it's Wednesday. Slow down, Just slow down and get some take a breath. You know, go in your tweets hard as you want to, but when you two and three days later, if you can't come with the substance behind it, because I'm that kind of dude, you know what I'm saying? When you want to talk football, let's talk substance. I'm good.

I care about watching the kids play. I care about watching the Hokies play. But if we're just going to get on the timeline and we just going to fire away these takes over and over and over, just give me some substance behind it. You know what I'm saying? That's all I'm saying. 100% Well, you already started. As we usually do, we like to tell the truth, and we've been telling the truths since the first iota. You said it and you talk about substance, so I'm going to give you my first substance. So we talked about what went bad, y'all. We got an identity problem because we can't run the ball 27 times and pass the ball 27 times. We cannot do that.

21:51 And that's what happened Saturday. We ran the ball 27 times. We ran the ball 27 times for 183 yards. Do the math. That's almost 8 yards of carry. We passed the ball 27 times. We, if you tell me we're 5050 the rest of the year, I couldn't tell you what the the record's going to be, but we can't do that, y'all. I think it's situational too. And and and go with me on this. I think if we get to 27, but it's like 6535 run early in the game and we've got a 8 or 10 point lead and we can start get doing a little this little that work some screens in, you know, work, work different areas of the field in the passing game. Being closer to 5050 is not a problem. But when you're running for 8 yards of carry and you're 5050 and you're having very ineffective work through the air, like what what are we doing here? We we got to understand the flow of the game. And I think that's where some of this inexperience in like sticking a little too rigidly to the opening game plan. When you see that pay things aren't quite going the way we want them to.

23:01 We need to do something a little different. I don't even know if I want to go in. I don't even know if I want to do. I mean, I don't even know what to start. I'm telling everybody to calm down. Like I didn't thought about this. So this is it. This is this is how I feel. You have one legit in the NFL guy on that offense right now, he is your running back. He's #33 he has left it all on the field for us. Every time he's able to play, your offense has to go through him that that's it like we are over thinking things. We putting a fucking backup quarterback in to be in the slot, the play receiver to set up for some play that who we going who we going to run the play against. We don't lost two games.

23:46 What what are we doing? And then I look at a wide receiver come in like Takahi and I'm like, Dang, he's got some great feet. Why don't we give him the ball in space, Things like that. I do not understand. I'm not telling them and I said this on on on the timeline. I said I would probably go to my NFL running back and say, how do you feel, man? How many times you think we need to give you the ball 3025 you taking care of it 25 times. You know, you feel you feel like Jamal Anderson, you want to you want to take it 60 times today. I'm not saying give him the ball 60 times. What I'm saying, if he's averaging 8 yards a carry, 5 yards a carry, and he's telling you he can go, like you got to get him the ball, the office has to go through him and that's going to open up other stuff.

24:36 And also, I'm not a quarterbacks coach, Tyler Bowen, and a quarterback coach either, but everybody told me that was going to be fine. So I ain't going to say nothing. Kyron is not the quarterback that they trying to make him be. They got to let him go be Kyron. I think I said this last. Week 2 weeks ago. Maybe two weeks ago, just let him go be him when things breakdown and he starts running. I don't know if he's been told not to run. I don't know if he don't want to run. I don't really know if 33's hurt and he's 75% and he's still giving us what he's giving us. I still got to say, hey man, can you go? But back to like you got to let Kyron be Kyron. Quit trying to make him a a drop back passer and throw the ball 30 times with him down.

25:22 It's just not working that you have to find your identity because the one we're trying to create is not the real idea. The one we're trying to create is not who we are. And and that is that's what's bad right now on the offensive side. We already talked about the defense. It's it's, it's, it's discipline. It's the discipline of staying with you, man, staying committed. And it's not once, it's not twice. It's not two games. It's three games because that ODU game, we saw it on that one play. We saw that one play. So you know, it's here. It's not oh, they're just better than out scheming us. No, because that was over to you. That shouldn't have happened there.

26:03 And we've already hit the other thing I want to talk about and thank you, Tally for doing it because you're making this go quick for us. We're not prepared. We're not prepared. Every week we look so unprepared and even more so when the bad things happen. Bad things are going to happen right in football. Bad things are going to happen in sports in general if you play them long enough. So when the first bad thing happened Saturday, which was the fumble, it just looked like, Oh my God, here we go again compared to what happened one minute and 30 seconds earlier. 2 yard loss in the backfield. I think we had, do we have a sack on that first drive?

26:44 We had multiple. They lost multiple yards on multiple plays on that first drive and they had a punt and then we were deering headlights for the next. What felt like what felt like the next quarter and a half. And to me, that's being prepared. That's the coaches like snap out of this shit, y'all. This game 00, Yeah. Yeah. And I think the the sloppy play in general, I think on both sides of the ball, whether it's the, you know, preparedness and not really being where where you need to be with your eyes and trust in that from a defensive standpoint, being a little more reckless with the ball than you'd like to see on the offensive side of the ball. I mean, you know, effectively what if you factor in the safety, the turnover on downs and the turnovers themselves, It's like, you know, five or six turnovers where you where you gave the ball back to Rutgers without punting or scoring right?

27:48 So this is this is a problem because it puts them in plus territory right out the gate. You got a running game. I mean, we're we're lucky between the missed field goals and the Woodson's strip fumble, they're right at the goal line that it wasn't worse than it was, right. And and a lot of that goes to the turnovers because pretty much every one of those, we set them up in pretty good field position. And we keep doing it. Yes, we do All righty. So real quick, anything y'all want prepared for anything that shocked y'all Tally, you mentioned it a few minutes ago, the one I the one that I said I was not prepared for. If you told me we held them to what we held them rushing the ball per carry.

Oh, if you would show me that's that line. Saturday. At 7:00 and I didn't get to see any of the game. I would have been like. We probably won this game 2817 because they kept trying to pound it down our throats and they they couldn't break. Hey, Curtis, got to tell you something. We weren't prepared for. Split zone. RPO. Even though we've seen it, aim one. And you know what else I think? We weren't prepared for, I've been, I ain't going to say I guess I wasn't prepared for it because I I thought we would be prepared for it, I guess. OK.

29:24 Rutgers is so. Their physical man, physical shit. And like when I watch. Us play where we are a little bit more physical than we have been in the past. But when I look at a team like that, I'm like they are physical. You know what I'm saying? We got to get more physical it because they're running backs like I'm watching a couple of times where their running backs are being hit by two and three people and then knocking people back and we got people just getting hurt. You know what I'm saying? Just having to get helped off and things and you can't help with injury. But I'm just saying like, what are we, what are, what are we doing? What are we doing with the strength and conditioning? Are we conditioning? How are we conditioning? What's our strength? This has been a problem.

30:05 Oh man, this has been a problem. We're not Big 10 level. Strength of edition. Right now it's Rutgers from the. Big 10 and I ain't talking like I understand Rutgers is a physical school, but how long are we going to like, how long are we going to wear that that badge? You know what I'm saying? Like you go out and you get somebody who helps you developed. You know what I'm it is it is it the strength and condition program? Are they not getting enough to eat? Yeah, I'll get some black people in there and cook for them kids so they can get some, so they can gain some weight. We're going to put a whole bunch of salt and shit in their food. They're going to have high blood pressure, but they're going to get beat. They they going to. Retain. Water. Retain water.

30:46 Hey, something like, but for real, it's like when I watched US play against a team like that, I'm like like when I watched US play against Vanderbilt, first of all, when I walked in there, I was like, damn, they. They big like they was. Bigger than I thought they was, you know what I'm saying? Like the big motherfuckers. And then when the game starts going and I see people, it ain't just older, we're getting beat. Like people running past us. Are they doing this? Like when I see us getting pushed down, when I see us getting jammed at the line or we can't jam them at the line, stuff like that. I'm like, damn, they physical, we got a we got to do some, we got to we got to handle some stuff different man.

31:26 So I wasn't prepared for that. I I knew it would be a physical game, but a lot of times we looking like the nail steel. It's a good way to put. It we are a lot of times we are looking like the nail and and it just. It's not what we're. Well, the whole thing is I think some of us are numb to it because for so many years we were the hammer. We were the hammer on the defensive and the offensive side of the ball. In the last decade plus, it's it's, it's gone the opposite way. I like what Andretti said, man. And I know. To me, it's really weird. We, we, we love. I love Frank.

Point 3 million the best guys in the country are getting paid insane amounts of money, but we know the importance of it now right so. We'll. Move on. We we've already mentioned Tootin and somebody put it up here and Sheldon pulled it out for me too. So Steven, shout out to you. He has the most missed tackles in the country, 30 in four games. That's insane. That's an insane amount.

32:49 He's got a ton of yak, so he's making contact. 148 yak of the 100 and excuse me, 148 yak. That was our total on Saturday, so 148 yak. So whenever we were running, we were getting contact early. We kept going. So shout out to those guys. But what else do you all like? Because tally we we lost this game by three. We didn't get could it have been 13 Brian? It could have could we have won by 13? Yes. So the whole thing. Is as bad as it is and like Tally, you know you had the space going on Saturday night. Shout out to you for getting that thing going and giving everybody a voice.

You're getting all the. Voices and your hearing stuff but we were all doom and gloom. But you start looking it's like. There's some. Good things still happen. Yeah, man, it's. He's making a lot of stuff happen, but you got a lot of people around him.

Now Martinez, they say he's going for like 240. Lyle isn't that big. He's more of a speed guy than Martinez is. But when I'm talking about being physical like this in the Miami of finesse, like they going to hit, we going to have to we're going to have our hands for him. Yeah, Lyle's got that. Kind of like he's he's big, a little bit taller, kind of like Adrian Peterson where where he's a a bigger back, but still with good speed, whereas Martinez is truly kind of a bruiser. So, you know, it's interesting to see. I mean, Martinez has the, you know, more carries so far. Lyle, definitely more of the home run hitter and you know, he's a guy that, yeah, he's going to, he's going to take those big plays to the house, man. He's not playing around.

So it's going to be important that we do well on those early downs and get them out of of their schedule. And make them have.
