He said he read because of what happened last year with him getting banged and getting injured, he's trying to get an extra year of eligibility. So at least one, there is a safety spot kind of taken right there from a guy that again, originally we were down to the wire form a few years ago. So that's good stuff. I am really glad. It's like almost in the stars. These guys have been seeing Jekyll and Hyde Curtis in the chat the last week. Ain't got no damn body visiting.

6:15 First of all, it's been, it's been a rough couple of days. My wife, you know, she works a lot and she just so happened be off to go to a game and it's on the other side of town. So she picked up about four of the boys and she was taking them to the game. It's been raining for like 3 days. Get them, they get almost there like probably 5 miles away from the gym and they get hit in the back. So her car's jacked up in the back right now. And then the next day we wake up in the upstairs bathroom flooded. So, Oh no, that's been some, that's been some fun stuff going on over here at the telly household.

We're going to obviously talk about coaching changes, a big coaching decision yesterday, but I do want to bring up something and I'm going to also, if you don't mind putting it up there, Brian from Steven, because it is something you do address with what happened. Unfortunately, gay Williams father did pass away this week and right now, you know, I I read his post it it it takes me back.

9:25 I was a very young man when I lost my father and for him, you know, for Pokey Nation, sending prayers and then thoughts and then whatever you can, good vibes, whatever you may believe in, whatever you may not believe in to Gabe right now because obviously through the holidays, losing a parent, one of those tough things. So Gabe, you were nice enough a few years ago to join us live and interview you. Your dad did a hell of a job with you young man and trust me he will be watching down from you and from just talking to you. I believe whatever you do in your life you're going to make him proud. So just you know, keep your thoughts and prayers out there.

You know, that's definitely not news that you, you know, want to have to talk about or, you know, you do want to have to address. But stuff like that happens, man. So just reaching out and saying, you know, I'm thinking about you, you know, we care about you, we love you, whatever the case may be. This is the time for it, man, because it's right around the holiday times. You lose a a family member in that fashion. And then he's also dealing with an injury, like you said, that young man is, you know, we've talked to him multiple times. He's been nothing but respectful. And again, like you said, Curtis, just I think whatever Gabe, if you if you watching, when you see this man, I think whatever you do, like, first of all, hope your nation's got your back and you going to make your family proud man. So we definitely sending prayers up for the Williams family at this time.

11:15 Yeah, obviously in in this situation, you nobody wants to to to be in this situation. And obviously already the the the mentals of recovering from an injury while you, you know, are, are mourning the death of of your father. That's got to be just a a whole lot on him right now. So anybody that can reach out and just, you know, let him know that that they're behind him, that they're thinking of him. Anything like that can can lift, lift his spirit. So, you know, do that in the in this moment. And you know, like, like, like you said, Tally, like you said, Curtis Hokie nations got your back and, and, and we're riding with you through this regardless of, you know, what the future holds for you. Absolutely.

11:56 All right, so let's now turn it over to some more fun stuff, some more football related stuff. And this started on Monday, I believe, when there was a rumor that Michael Vick was interested in potentially taking the Sacramento State job, which is way out in California, or the Norfolk State job right down the street from where he grew up down in the Tidewater and announced yesterday. Mike Vick is now officially the head coach of the Norfolk State Spartans. First of all, I, I know I texted Dwight last night and said because that's his cousin, that's his family. That's a big step. It's a big thing for Michael from where he was, you know, 15 years ago, 16 years ago. What do y'all, what do y'all think about it? I mean, I know we all probably have some thoughts. Anybody want to kick it off here? I think it's incredible, man.

12:49 I will let Tally ride first. I know he's got a lot to say on this so. I was just going to say, man, I mean, you hear so much stuff about, you know, what somebody wants to do with the law. He don't want to do this or he wants to do this or, you know, do you have people say what? You get Michael Vick to be the quarterback culture. We should get, you know, Michael Vick to be the OC And some people say he don't want to coach. He's making this money doing this. And you never know, you know, you never know what somebody wants to do or what's on their mind to do. But now we know that he wants to coach. So again, I met, I met, met Mike in person. And it was 10 minutes of just me and him having a conversation at a Cracker Barrel here in Huntsville, AL.

13:36 And he made me want to run through a wall. So I know when he gets in front of 17/18/19 year olds, just having a, you know, getting them prepared for a game and just talking about his life and things he's went through. And he's from that area, you know what I'm saying? He's he's him being from there connecting with those kids and say, hey, whatever you're going through. I went through this stuff and I made it to this level, which was the highest level #1 draft pick, you know, did everything just about that he could do with his football career. I think it's going to be incredible for, you know, just him and the families and the, and the kids that he'll be able to touch. And I'm excited to see who he, where he goes from there, you know what I'm saying?

14:25 Because you never know. And sometimes, you know, for black men in coaching, you just got to get a start, you know what I'm saying? Like for whatever Dionne is, you know, and I'm not trying to make it black and white, but I'm just saying sometimes there are politics that are involved and you just got to get a start. Like everybody knew who Dionne was. And I feel some type of way about Dionne, the things he says or things he does. But I got to give Dionne his credit. He went to Jackson State and he did, for the most part, what he said he was going to do. He got Travis Hunter for the most part where he said he was going to get him as well as other players that he's coached. So Dion got his start similar to, you know, kind of what what, what Victoria's doing.

15:11 So I'm excited to see where it takes him, man. I mean, I hope it, I hope it crosses paths with Vt because, man, we've used him for so much for 30 years or however long it's been. Well, he gets to use his own name a little bit now. I mean, he's still forever going to be a part of Virginia Tech, but I mean, like, we can't call him up to come to a game and say, hey, we're honoring Michael Vick today and he's going to be there because guess what? He's going to be playing in his own games. I mean, he's going to be coaching his own games. So we got to find a way to incorporate that into what we're doing. But it's not about Virginia Tech. It's about him going to that school and and leaving his mark. So kudos to Mike Vick and the Victoria family. Yeah, I'm excited for him.

15:53 I think this is a good opportunity for for him to really, you know, get get a good start in, in college football. And it sounds like, you know, he's been wanting to pursue this for a while. I know there was some flirtations, you know, with some smaller pro leagues and things like that. So it's good to see him, you know, get his foot in the door with, with college football here, doing it in his own backyard. That's always, that's always got to be something fun that you can talk about. And I, I think it's going to be a good foundation for him to build off of. And I know Tally, you made the, the Dion comparison. It's hard not to write. I mean, you talk about, you know, players that their brand and the juice that they bring kind of follows them where they go, right?

16:44 It's like, I mean, there's probably 2nd and none Dion, but the, the, the Victoria aura is still, is still nothing to sneeze at, you know, comparatively. And, and that alone, I think is going to be something that's going to have people interested in what Norfolk State is about. So I'm excited to see what, what, what comes from that. I'm excited to see what that staff build out. Looks like. Sounds like Dwight's going to have a, a piece in that. What piece that is will remains to be seen, but that's exciting for, for him as well. And, you know, just the, the whole circle there. And I'm, I'm really excited to see what they do with that. Yeah, I think, I think it's I think it's a good hire.

17:25 Obviously Norfolk State's a program that's, you know, struggled for some time. And I think, you know, a lot of times at that level, you know, it's it's worth taking a chance on a guy who, you know, could potentially bring some recruiting prowess to that to that school, especially being, you know, in the MIAC where, you know, it's really just about, you know, getting the players and and, you know, trying to put them in a system where they can succeed relative to their competitions. So, you know, coaching on HBCU is a great fit and I think, you know, I obviously don't know what's going on in his head, but I feel like if he, you know, can can string something together and, you know, have some success here, maybe something down the road popping up even bigger. So obviously just take it one day at a time. But I think it's I think it's a great opportunity for for both parties here. Agreed. It's a it's a great opportunity for both parties.

18:06 It's a great opportunity for Mike again, from where he was and everything that happened years ago and how he got back in the league, turn things around his media career again. Brian, you mentioned doing some consulting with some of the some of the spring ball leagues and now this. So great for my again, big congratulations to him. Can't wait to see what it holds down there for him, what the staff looks like. So that's going to be pretty sweet. Like Speaking of Staffs, it took long enough, damn it for them, but staff changes did take place last week. Curtis does not have to throw things this week. Everybody, it was, it was, it was going to get ugly if, if, if these didn't.

18:54 Happen. Oh, it was going to be real ugly if none has been announced by the time we went this week. So anyway, obviously defensive coordinator Chris Maher out offensive line coach, Ron Crooks out strength and conditioning coach to white ball. Out. So let's kind of go back around. I'm going to start with Shelton on this one. Shelton, just your reactions, your feelings when it was announced, did they, do you feel like the right guys unfortunately met their end? Yeah, I do think it was the right decision. I was very surprised to see Mark go just because I felt like pride would kind of, you know, put his loyalty to him above above the team. But he didn't and and credit surprise prove me wrong. So I wrote about this for the key play, mostly focusing on the offensive line this week and and talking about the issue with Crook.

19:42 It seemed like from what Price said in his press conference, he was more frustrated with the relationships and recruiting aspect of Crook's tenure here. You know, they just did not recruit the bodies they needed to in the offensive line. I think there were some things that were mishandled earlier on in Price tenure that kind of hurt them there. But the last two seasons they just have not been able to land guys. And I know there's they've sent out some offers. But you're looking at 7 O Lyman recruited in the last two cycles combined, and that includes the portal as well, which is just inexcusable given, you know, how many bodies they need and they're already, you know, losing guys left and right on the current offensive line. So I think that change kind of had to happen. Development didn't seem to be great either with Marv. I mean, it was kind of a it was kind of a weird situation where like the defensive stats were pretty good, but it was somewhat of a mirage just because tech faced so many backup quarterbacks the entire season, like all their wins where it gets backup quarterbacks and all their losses were to, you know, decent starting quarterbacks. So you kind of have to take that with a little bit of a grain of assault.

20:40 You know, obviously you had, you know, bad situational football. The lake game collapses. You know, clearly that's part partly on triggering the conditioning. I think, you know, maybe a little bit more than we thought just because, you know, if you, you know, you can kind of see teams wear down late in games. Tech gave up two touchdowns in their two overtime losses to Syracuse and Vanderbilt. And I think there was a combined 6 plays in those two losses. So they were clearly just completely uncompetitive late in games. So, so yeah, I mean, it just had to happen. There's probably, probably one, maybe two more staffers that would have liked to see maybe move on, but, you know, probably made the right decision for the program. So we'll we'll leave it be for now. Curtis, you're muted if you're talking. Yeah.

21:25 Saying tally your turn. Oh, OK. Oh man, where to start? Fucking fire them all. Everybody can go. That's how I felt. You know what I'm saying? Get rid of everybody you've been. You've been putting that. Opinion for a month now. Everybody can go where I could go to if he they, we knew he wasn't going to get fired because it just, you know, that ain't in the cards. But I don't know. It was kind of like, Shelton said with with the online recruiting, it was like, man, you just can't, you can't win like that. You cannot not recruit the online or get anybody in the portal or I don't know what we was doing.

22:07 You know, we sitting on our hands and we don't have enough bodies to rotate in and you rotate in or keep people in that probably don't need to be in. Long story short, I was OK with the, you know, it, it is what it is on that. I was happy that the online coach was gone. I hated that we went through so many online coaches, you know, in, in the amount of years that we have. But you got to keep going till you get the right one. I guess that's the that's the main thing. And then I don't know, man, I'm just, I'm still, I'm waiting on the defensive side of the defensive coordinator job to see what happens or what they bring in because I don't know, man.

And I don't know where they're going to go with that because I'm thinking like, OK, if you get rid of your defensive coordinator, but you not getting rid of any other defensive guys, what coordinator is going to come in and just be like, OK, I'm just going to coach with what you have. Most coordinators are going to say, I need to bring some people with me. I need to bring my whoever D line coach, I need to bring my cornerbacks coach. So it's probably going to be like, OK, I'm going to give you full range to the defense because this is where we were struggling at and I need you to come in and fix it. Or is he going to say, oh, well, no, you have to coach with my guys because I'm loyal to them.

23:32 You know, I feel like it was a scapegoat kind of just to get rid of the defensive coordinator at this point until I see what happens next. But what I think is going to happen is they're going to go, hey, we're going to do this and it's going to be some kind of intern hire thing or I'm going to be pissed about that. So I'd like to see what they do next before I can really, really judge how I feel about it. I can, I can tell you that I can already judge strength and conditioning. Coach, get the fuck out. You can go. When I seen who was it was it was it Clemson? They stiff armed, they stiff armed Kelly Lawson and he started running like a a werewolf on this, like who was that?

24:22 It was somebody. Anyway, I was like, man, he too, he, he, he looks too good to be not making those tackles. We ain't getting people to the ground. You know, I think, Shelton said. And I know I'm rambling a little bit, but I know Shelton keeps up with a lot of stats for me and he talked about how unlucky Auburn was as a team. I think we was pretty unfucking lucky. Like if you get Cam Ward on the ground, then the game's over. We missed that tackle, they're catching balls on their back. We wrap up, we have the perfect play call when we send the blitz against Clemson and we get to the quarterback and next thing you know, he escapes and throws it above his head and they get a touchdown from that. So stuff like that, man, I don't know. So I, I liked Marv.

25:13 I didn't like Marv for certain reasons. I did like him for other reasons. I'm not saying I'm against the the the firing, but I need to see what they do next. Then I'll come on here and I'll really go off and I hope and, and, and I'm going to say this too. I hope they go out and get a online coach, give me some fresh blood. I don't want to hear this. Davis is going to be the offensive line. People love him and he's so great. If you've been in the damn building and you ain't been able to fix it. Then you ain't the guy. You ain't. The guy. So you ain't the guy. Thank you Charlie, you can help. You can help, but you can't be the guy, so I'm done now. The only, the only internal hire that I'm good with is promoting Jarrett Ferguson, the strength and conditioning coach. And that's because Jarrett Ferguson had the same position under Gentry that he had under Gault. So to me, he has the the pedigree to take over this position and run it in a in a fashion that we know has been successful at Virginia Tech.

26:24 And it's probably also the position that if, if from an assistant standpoint, if you're talking about promoting an assistant probably has the least to to least input on how the overall program is run relative to Co offensive line coach or whatever. But so he so to me, he is the best. If you're going to look at an internal hire, he's the only one that I'll be OK with. We if we go internal at any other position, I will be pissed. So I'm starting, I'm starting at the end and we're working backwards here. So that that that's what I don't want to see. I thought we got rid of the people we need to get rid of. We, you know, we, I think we had highlighted problems that this team had as, as things were, were, were coming down the stretch. We didn't block well, particularly in pass protection. We didn't close out games well.

27:17 We had rough third quarters on defense. So basically the entire second-half was, was kind of a joke from a defensive standpoint. You know, looking big picture, obviously game by game things were different, but looking big picture, third, third quarters were awful. Ends of games, especially the last two minutes were awful from a defensive standpoint. So that that's kind of in Marv's corner and a combination of that with with Galt as well with the conditioning piece. And then you look at, you know, Crook, obviously I think performance wise, yeah, we, we talked about pass pro, but also if, if you're not able to get the guys in, you're not able to build a relationship that you need to, to put all the pieces together for an offensive line that is consistently competitive in the ACC. It it's, it's tough to make the case for that that person to stay on board.

28:12 You know, we, we, we always identified pass pro as a big problem for this offensive line. But obviously if you're not bringing in guys that are raising that level, that are pushing those guys out of starting positions, that's a problem as well. So I, I, I'm with coach Prow on his ultimate reasoning for, for moving on from Crook and Marv and Gault here, because I think those are the three areas that will probably give us the best bang for our buck in terms of improvement if we're looking to to roll in some new coaches next year. Now what I think is interesting is what Tally said here of I think if the the DC you hire is probably at least going to want to bring in one guy with him.

So if if we're looking at one guy, maybe 2, and we're looking at the current construction of the defensive coaching staff, I think you can still identify two people potentially on that staff that would take lesser roles while still being a part of Virginia Tech's coaching staff. I think that's Pearson Prelo. I think that is Sean Quinn. So you know, you're looking at those two potential. What what I would see is, is basically if we're looking at ADC, we're looking at ADC that is coaching safeties and or linebackers. Yep, I agree with that.

29:45 All right, I'm on real quick what Brian said. If there is an internal hire and chill, I'm going to pitch this to you in just a second. So hold pipe with internal hires because you're the only one that didn't kind of voice. Ferguson would be the only one I'd be OK with. If they hire Brett Davis, you will see a mad motherfucker in about 10 days on liquor because it's what me and Tally just said. He's been here already. To me, the only reason he's staying here is they had a fire crook. I think he's out the door because I don't think you do that. Because that juju, it kind of gives off like this motherfucker has been here for the last two years. He has been teaching. He has been doing the same stuff Ron's been doing. He didn't do a good enough job.

30:28 Why you just going to give him the keys? Don't do that. But obviously, I think more So what Ron, where it probably made us a little more angry. Is it took and shown? You can probably give the exact data points. It felt like it took six games for some of the younger guys to start getting more snaps, more snaps. It seemed like he was afraid of change. Y'all know the one guy we know we felt like should have been benched the entire year, but it's like he was afraid of change. And in this situation, as we always talk about practice versus field, some guys are great in practice, some guys look like shit in practice, but you put them on the field, and this is regardless of type of sport, you put them on the field, everything turns to aces. It's like he always made that misstep in in practice. I wonder why because he's not a practice player. He needs to be in in live game action and I think that's what eventually did Ron Crooks in for Chris Marv Shelton. I know you probably dove even deeper into it, but I saw the Doug Bowman thing from 247 about the first half, second-half differences.

31:43 To me, what it show with Chris Marv is Chris kid. We say what we want to say in most situations this year he could create a really good game plan to begin with, really good game plan to begin with his adjustments he could not adjust. He did not know how to do that on the fly. Unfortunately for him, he was a first time defensive coordinator. He did not have anyone really with a lot of seasoning note as a Co DC like like somebody like a Bob shoot to say, hey, what do we need to do here, coach? Talk me through it. And that's my big thing with Chris. It was the first second-half differences. They cannot do any sort of internal hiring for the DC. They cannot do an internal hire for the AOL. I mean, I don't even know who you would hire internally for. You couldn't, You couldn't.

32:33 But you never know we've. Seen crazy issues if you let no if you let Twitter tell it process. Just do what the Vanderbilt coach does and he but he said that motherfucker is 6 and 6 too. He beat some teams, but still 6 won six games. Here's the piece. He already, he already ruled that out. He said that at the presser. And I want to say one other thing. If y'all want to talk about the news conference, we can. I'm going to put you to Sheldon in just a second. That might have been the nicest throwing people under the bus I've ever seen because he threw he she, he showed their flaws. He was very cordial about it, but he threw all of them under the bus basically saying we weren't good enough here, We weren't good enough here, we weren't good enough here.

33:15 And you knew like, Yep, that was Chris Mall. Oh, that was wrong for Sheldon real quick. In house hires. Are you OK with any in house hires? Would you be pissed? Would you fly off like I would? I mean, I, I tend to be case by case basis. I guess the one the one potential would be Brent Davis, who knows very well respected. I don't know. I mean, I I definitely for strength and conditioning. I would definitely like to see them go go outside the house and get some a little bit more, you know, proven. I think, you know, over the last couple years, prize really stocked up his staff with lots of BT guys, you know, alums, Hokies, you know, guys he's friends with, you know, essentially people that he has connections with. And I'm not saying there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but I think there is a balance between like, you know, going to the field that you're comfortable with versus actually going out and expanding your, your horizon and kind of getting, you know, some, some big time higher. So I personally would probably learn more towards, you know, going, going outside the house and trying to get someone big time.

34:21 I mean, cause they've got, they've got decent money. I mean, you know, Marva's making a top, you know, 3540 salary. So I mean, they, they've got some money to spend. And I, I, I just prefer to, you know, if, if you can't, if you can't have success with, you know, your, your current staff, the guys you're comfortable with. And so kind of, you know, refuting a little bit of the Joe Rudolph there, but not necessarily under playing that, you know, Rudolph wasn't a talented coach because he is. What about you, Shelton?
