So, and I remember saying this Saturday night, like I think I think that loss was good because it will completely strip everything in that administration down to parts. We will sell it off, we will gut it, we will get rid of it. We will we will jettison every old idea from from the previous administration and we're going to move forward with this new era of hoagie football.

Great way to put it, Shelton, He's smiling. He's been smiling ever since, you know? So if Shelton's happy, I'm happy because I know he's coming with some factual stats. He's not just going to be blind opinionated like I am. I don't think it's any secret how I felt. Well, I was in Vegas, man, when we just played, ODUI was in Vegas. I may have watched like 1/4, but it just was. There was no lie, you know, it was, it was the end, man. You know what I'm saying?

So give it a little bit of time, let it simmer and come back in about a month and we will, like we did last week, we're going to bring y'all on to tell us who your coach is. We'll keep a tally of it.

6:42 The best part about it is recorded. So if somebody comes up tally, that's going to be great in about two years, right? Somebody come up in here and said that's the coach, that's the coach. And they asked are we going to bring you up? We're going to bring your picture on the screen and say, y'all remember when Andretti said to hire this guy? So that's what you did. But we're off on that night. But before we get into the firing and everything, I want to ask you all questions. Shelton, I believe you would have been in school or about to go to school when everything started because this is the first. This is the three of the ODUS. Which is worse?

7:22 We'll start with Sheldon Tally 20/18/2022 or 2025. Which one is the worst? Start with me or. Start with you. Yeah, OK. Yeah. So for me, I would say, I would say 2022 was the worst and I can explain why. 2018, I felt like was just a genuine upset where you had a team just played absolute lights out with a quarterback that nobody's ever heard of, went on to become a church minister. Like that was just a team playing their best game, like all the collectively the best game of their lives. And, you know, lost by two touchdowns. But we ended up having a, a 500 season that year. So I mean, you know, it wasn't like, you know, it wasn't like a major shift, like the trajectory of our program.

8:09 The reason I, I'd say 2022 is because that was the first time in the pride era. And there were so many high hopes and expectations for, you know, for, for for the coaching staff. And, you know, obviously for that season that when we saw that horrible performance, and particularly considering how poorly Tech played, just the amount of coaching mistakes, the, you know, the procedural penalties, all that stuff, I felt like it really put a huge stamper on what we thought was going to be a very positive moment. And I feel like ever since that game, there's always kind of this idea in the back of your head of like, OK, is this stuff a really. It's because they were just so poor that night that it was like it kind of, you know, ripped away all of your, your, you know, good feelings about what what was achievable for for tech football. So that was definitely kind of a, a dramatic shift, I would say, in the overall optimism of the Hokie fan base. And that's why I'd say 2022.

9:01 What about you, Tyler? Everyone, everyone is is is a is a good for that everyone. But but I'll say 25 for me, man, it's just because Sheldon makes a great point, you know, makes a great point when he talks about 22 went down, but 25 was absolutely like you didn't do nothing. You know, in the other games, it was like you were kind of in it, you know, you had this going good or this kind of you was losing 31 to 0 at your house. Like somebody walked in your house, you was throwing a BBQ, kicked you off your own grill, said you go sit in the bathroom till I finish cooking and then I'll bring you a plate. And then they didn't even bring you a plate. They just had you sitting in the bathroom with a toilet full of dookie.

9:56 That's what happened. 25 was horrible. It's been leading up to it. I mean, I guess the only reason I would say, you know, man, maybe not, you know, maybe not. Maybe it was 22 because we had high hopes, but it's like you kind of you you you start off the season with South Carolina and you kind of lose at the end. Was it a fluke? Then you go up on Vanderbilt. You, you like, you got some kind of hope. You feel like, OK, yeah. Then you got ODU. That comes in. First of all, we've seen the team quit against Vandy, and then you're coming to this game and the same team showed up. So you didn't want it to happen. But it's like most people who have watched the team knew this team has quit.

10:40 You know, whether they quit on the coach or they just quit football, like, I don't know. I don't know what it is, but it wasn't good and it showed on the field. So 25 to me was by far the worst. See, I'm I'm, I'm, I'm against 25 needed to happen. 2022 is bad. But to me, 2018 is the one that they showed there were flaws in the way everything was built around the football program because we were ten win, 9 win. Could have been even better in 2017. And then remember 18, we went down to Florida State, shut them out, swag, surf, all that stuff. It was unbelievable.

11:20 And it's like you have this game, you're 2 and I think we were ranked 18th in the country. And it was just a meltdown because everybody keeps trying to point when did we lose it? I think it was right there. You went to their house, which you never should have did That happened. Josh Jackson snaps his leg, you go six and six. See the worst part, Sheldon? That year for them, they weren't an 8 or 9 or two. They were four and eight. They were four and eight in 2018. That game is to me is what the game that that is the game that set us back the most. Because if you go down there and you stomp them or you just win by a touchdown or two, all right, you probably get out of that Series A lot quicker.

But it showed so many issues internally on the program, and it's just feels like it's been downhill since then since then. 2019 was the one blip in the end of 2023. So three different opinions on that and I see y'all some people are throwing it in here 2018 25 Sheldon it, but it's tough to like you said y'all both make great points because 25 the quit was there tally. But like you said, Sheldon, 2022, it's the start of a new era. And when he snapped the ball from Norfolk to Virginia Beach, good Lord almighty, it was like literally, I remember sitting here thinking, watching that game because we were all part of it.

And there's no, there's no right answer. Obviously they're all embarrassing. I just. Feel like Oh no, no, it's, it's all the way you felt inside. Yeah, like, I just, I feel like there was a silver lining with with last week's game. In the sense that this is. A This is a rebirth of hokey football. Well, I guess I guess for me too is like great silver lining. I don't trust these motherfuckers to make the right decision. So I'm still on the fence. I think that it's coming, but I don't know, you know what I'm saying?

So basically on behalf of Amy and our entire family, I want to thank President Sands, what Virginia Tech community for giving me the opportunity to lead the program. Coaching at Virginia Tech was an incredible honor and incredible chapter to the outstanding young men. Ya ya, you'll get it.

15:54 Here's the thing about Pry. Where we, we, we said it. We've said it over and over. Genuinely, he gives a shit about the program. Genuinely, he is a good person. Like. He's a good guy and and when you read the statement, it's like it, it wasn't like it was gone. There was no statement. He literally got the guy packed up a statement they they put. Out a statement. And what did it say? Lily almost said the exact same thing. I'm not even kidding. Like it was just verbatim. Like thanks for everyone, but put it on Twitter. But but. Let's let's, let's, let's get this, let's unpack this for just a second. I don't want to all the time, but just because Sheldon did hit on it and I know a lot of podcasts, people have been talking about it.

16:43 One in particular, my guys not going to call their names that may not want me to, but they know who they are, have been hitting on it a lot because they were big Fuente guys. No problem. Sure, I me myself, I'm not comparing or blaming the regime of Fuente for pry or vice versa, but I can't say. I did tweet on it and say they came in at a different time. It was the program was in different places when they started. They were in different places. The talent floor and ceiling were in different places. So I don't think that I want to say that the right way and I've been, I want y'all to tell me what you think. I don't think that we should keep bringing up Fuente. He's been gone.

17:31 Pride hasn't messed up on his own, but Fuente left. People think he was a great coach still, which is great for him. He left this program in a bad position. You know, Pride had a long way to dig out of now. Once he kind of got to a certain position, he should have been able to build off of that and he couldn't. You know, he doesn't have the capacity to be a good coach. You know, he may be a decent salesman. He may be a decent, decent motivator, but he wasn't a good head coach. But for people to keep saying, you know, oh, Fuente did this and he was miles better and he was just like, it still kind of baffles me to think like it does not negate all of the bad stuff that he did. He still wasn't, he still did some bad stuff. You know, he may have did some good stuff, but he still did some bad stuff in it.

18:23 Well, he did better than pride. He still was like it's OK for him to be better than pride and still be bad. So that's just my spill on it. I'll let y'all take it and unpack it there. Well, let me let me put it to both y'all this way now and I'll since Shelton kind of tally got us here. I'll pitch to you is the program as it stands and I'm talking all aspects, is it better? Is it any better state than it was in 2021? Provided that they can get some new blood in there and and find the right to lead them. Yes, it is I, I actually think I would argue the program was in a really bad spot in 2020 or not a great spot in 2021. And I actually think that's the reason we hired pride is because we missed out on some of our our better candidates because the job was not perceived as a very good job. And I don't think and a lot of that to be honestly, to be honest was because of the administration. I think there were, there were things that people knew in 2021 that they've not know in 2016 as and that was how we were able to hire Fuente.

19:21 So I think over time, the perception of the tech job became worse and worse. Now I think hopefully if we get, if we get the right people in there, it can, it can become much better. Yeah, no, that's, that's good. Good way to put it. Infrastructure has has an infrastructure should change because of this. It's got so bad that the people up top have started being like, you know what, this really is bad. We are going to have to do something different. So I agree with Shelton on that. I think that then was a little bit worse and that's why I brought it up because I keep seeing people trying to go back to this, you know, let's go back to four years and different ones. They leave it in a better plot. Well, he won more games.

20:04 He had more talent. Those first two years he had, the four years he had extremely mortality. He got he got left with a a better program. You know, even with Frank being at the end of his road and couldn't continue coaching, he still had the roster with a lot of talent on it. So we ain't got to get into all that. I just keep seeing people pop up and talk about all of that and I'm just like, we have to for a couple. Reasons because a where you begin your journey and then where you leave it is a huge, huge story in itself. And again, I think Fuente really good coach, but he didn't like to recruit.

20:47 He didn't have the best people skills. We could see that. That's the shit that as you get deeper into your head coaching career, you have to become really good at. It's not just coaching anymore. That's the shit Prowl is good at. He unfortunately couldn't do the other shit right. And it sucks. But if you ask me right now, and I mean, we, we, we, we talked to people who have connections inside high schools. Remember what some of the stories were coming out. They hadn't been here in forever. We hadn't heard from them. They didn't come visit, they didn't come check on us. They didn't do shit where this regime was a complete 180. I think the next regime, whoever it's going to be, the day they walk into any of these schools within the, I know the six hour radius, but any big football school that's in our footprint.

21:36 People are going to know. Oh, that's Virginia Tech. Oh, they, they've been here three times already in the last six months. They're coming to see some. And so they're coming. The relationships are built. They're not going to have to recreate them. They're going to be able to walk in. I'll ask the question in a little while and I, I think it's going to be one that y'all probably see coming, but they're going to be able to walk in and it's going to be a hell of a lot easier to recruit and sell the program to where it was at the beginning or the end of 2021 into 2022. Sheldon, you said it a couple times and we're going to kind of jump around a little bit just based on what you said, because it is, I think somebody's made new people have said if you watch the presser, it was clear with defeated, it's likely going to be a full structure in the athletic department.

22:26 The fire, he didn't even get the fire prop. He didn't even get to send the memo out as Tim Sands has sent the memo out. Shelton. How deep does it need to go? You said earlier to the ground. Is it all the way to the ground? I think so. I think a couple things. Obviously you're going to get into AD and with a new, when a new AD comes in, you're going to get in your new senior administrator. So if you go on the, if you go on the staff director on hokiesports.com, you can see all the senior level administrators. Those are, you know, your sport admins, your your directors, your, you know, chief financial officers, etcetera, etcetera, that all sort of, you know, make the kind of run the show.

23:08 A lot of those people have have been there for, you know, some 10 to 15 years. And so I really think it's time to get some new blood in there. That's it. They're all bad or anything like that. But when you've consistently underperformed and you know, you're you're falling behind in the money game, I think it might be time for some, so for some outside ideas. So I think they'll go on that. They also think they need to restructure the Hoagie Club, you know, get more staffing, new leadership, more resources, someone that's, you know, has, has, you know, fundraising experience, ideally at a Power 4 level. So I'd say between Hoagie Club and the the internal administration, I, I think everything needs to be completely restructured.

23:48 Now. Tally anything you want to add on that because I'm about to throw the next one which I think you will jump on. It is just. Real quick, I'll say it then let you throw it on. I'm not a politics guy by no means. I just feel like when you are in a place too long similar to politics, it's time to change. Eight years, you need to go, you know what I'm saying? You've been here too long. Especially if you ain't doing good. Why are we still doing the same thing man? Let's change it up. So Sheldon put it perfectly. Hey, I'm so glad Sheldon was able to get on here because y'all know I get on here and start rambling. I just, I just let my protege, my young guy, just get on here, kick it to y'all real quick and then we go to the next thing.

But with that being said, we're going to take it down to the studs in everything that was said yesterday. Everything that was said yesterday, it looks like they're Sean. It's going to go down to the studs because we're basically going to have a whole new structure to the athletic department. There is going to be the football with what sounds like an NFL structure, which I am going to say is probably going to be a general manager.

And then the other areas, this is kind of caught my and even though this isn't football more of a corporate structure for the rest of the athletics department. We, we, we talked about it for years here, Mom and pop shop, mom and pop shop it. It's gotten a little bit better, but it sounds like. Likely with everything. The BOV is going to do in the next few weeks. It is going to look inside and out. Now I'll pitch this to y'all. What do y'all do Y'all think for school? Like Virginia Tech, even though we're not the biggest, is a NFL GM type model where it's going to be AGM? My assumption is the GM, whoever that gets hired as is probably going to make decisions on the coaches. Is that OK?

To have something like that, I don't know the term, but or the the name that you put on it, you know, you don't want to just throw money to somebody who's not doing nothing. But similar to what Sheldon said, you got to have somebody who knows football. And I come from the sales world and the marketing world. I just feel like our marketing has been horrible. I mean, I feel like that our social media stuff has gotten better as far as pictures and videos, but I feel like the marketing that we've been doing has been horrible. Like, I just feel like, don't kill me, everybody. I'm tired of hearing about a game that we lost 25 years ago. I'm tired of it.

26:40 You know what I'm saying? If you want to talk about something, let's go talk about Clemson. Show the replay of Clemson when we lost in 2016 in the ACC Championship. That's closer to us being relevant than 25 years ago losing the Florida State. Like, I'm tired of keep bringing this team back. I'm tired of keep bringing this up. Like our marketing team keeps wanting to build around that and the people that's higher up want to keep building on that. Let it go. Like we it's over. We didn't even have social media back then. Like I'm almost 40, I'm old. So if they older than me, they fucking old, you know what I'm saying? Like quit telling me about nostalgia and bring me into the new generation, Shelton's generation.

Like we need somebody to come in and go, hey, I've been around football right now and this is how it's being played. This is how you have to attack NIL. It's not the same way as it used to be, you know? So I think that you do have to have some people to do things like that and know things like that. I don't know who it is, you know what I'm saying, But me myself, I wanted to be somebody different. I want to, I don't want to get rid of Beamer as far as like Frank Beamer is always going to be Virginia Tech. But I'm tired of hearing about Frank Beamer every game. But we don't have anything else to talk about. Tired of hearing about pride.

28:11 Used to be here when Beamer was here, like it was cool at first. It ain't work. Time to go. And to be honest with you, I'm going to give Fuente some kudos. I think that's why he was like, he was. I think he was tired of it too, because they talked about things he said at practice when he talked about I'm tired of hearing about Virginia. I'm tired of this. I think he was just like. We have a. This is. A losing program, like our biggest game was a loss, you know what I'm saying? Our biggest game ever was a loss, and that's all we keep talking about. So I'm tired of hearing about it, so I'm going to just do something totally different. But when he came in, everything was force fed to him. He had a he had ADC that he had to keep.

28:51 That was a Virginia. Tech guy, you know, he had coaches that he had to keep. Then he had to hire a new DC who was a Virginia Tech guy and was a loser, you know, not a loser person. But I'm talking about on the field. So I just think that he probably got tired of the 25. Put it in the rafters, put it on some shirts. I'm tired of hearing about the 25. The lunch bell. It's not the same. If it's not the same, stop trying to make it that, you know what I'm saying? You can still talk about traditions, but create new ones. So I'm ready for all that at the end, man. I'm ready for somebody to come in and say, hey man, I really respect what's been built here. I want to build on this legacy. But I think this is the way that we can do that and then let's go do this here. Half strippers on the sideline.

29:35 I don't know what the fix is. Y'all want to ask me? I know somebody's going to message me and say, well what do we need to do? Because you say get rid of sad man Yeah, get rid of it. In my opinion, if that's going to help us to, like, go into the next stage, sure, do it for big games. Do it when we get in prime time, like, do something different. Because what we keep doing is showing up, jumping, getting beat down, leaving at halftime. Tired of that. So that's my rant for right now. I'm going to throw it back to you, Curtis. Well, I'm going to give Sheldon. 'S opinion on this Sheldon, do you like what's likely going to be the new model I? Don't think they really have a choice. I think that's going to every every team. You know, I was I was thinking about this today.

30:16 During the the mid twenty 10s, there was a shift towards hiring the sort of CEO type head coaches like Davos Sweeney that kind of, you know, aren't aren't as involved as in the X and OS, but they kind of manage the program. They do fundraising, schmooze, schmooze with donors, all that stuff. And that's obviously what, you know, kind of got Vt in trouble with Fuente is that he was good at the X and OS, but wasn't so much suited for the more, you know, the more modern climate. Now, I think because of how much responsibility coaches had to take, they're shifting the role of the finance part of it to the GM. So now I think we're going to see a shift more back towards the XS and those coaches rather than the CEO type, which means that obviously Tech needs to focus number one on getting a coach that can absolutely maximize his talent.

31:00 So I do, I do, I do want to see the, the business and finance aspect kind of shifted towards the more managerial side, like AGM, director of player personnel, etcetera, etcetera. But they, they need to be actual football people. Like this cannot be, you know, like, you know, tenured administrators within the athletic department. It has to be actual hired football people who have football knowledge and, and knowledge of business and, and, and both of those things together. We need to hire actual experienced people. So yeah. No, no, no, I think that's that's the way. Great way to look at it. Shelter. Now, can your coach still be a stick when it comes to talking to kids? No, but I think you're making a great point as far as they won't need to do it all anymore. The GM can find you can have people lay down the foundation of the recruiting of going out, making the insurance and outs in the schools and basically tally you go back to the sales thing is there sometimes in certain businesses, there's different levels and effectively you got a closer coach is still going to be closer.

32:06 Because if you got the coach who's a good exiting O's guy and he can just close the deals, then that's that's what you're looking for. You can do X's and O's and when you need to step in the room to close the deal, you know what to say to the kid because you know what you've done the X's and O's on the kid, right? This is what takes this kid. If I say this line right here, he's going to come on board. So I like the way it's going because personally I think it's easy to find those guys who can do the GM type stuff. It's harder to find the coaches. Yes. There are enigmas like Frank Beamer who have it all, who have the personality, who can recruit but also has the XS and OS part of his game on. All right, let me flip over to this real quick. Back to pry because this is kind of the way we go. I had some set up but this is how we do it sometimes. In tally we've we've.

33:08 Said it a number of times, but he's been fired now. What was his biggest issue? What was his biggest problem in the three years? Three games prize the biggest. Problem. It was his biggest problem. He couldn't finish. He couldn't finish the game. He couldn't find a way to win. He. Couldn't finish. You could say that it's so hard because like I feel like it kind of goes into everything, but mainly couldn't finish games couldn't finish with big recruit. You know that has other stuff in there, but I just couldn't finish man. I mean, OK, makes sense I. Mean you won, you won in 12 in one score games. It's truthful, yeah.
