Dream Team Pt 2

I said yeah, I had it off a few times and been rolling around having some good times in the Jeep and trying to try to stay dry because it's been rainy as shit in Richmond. Yeah. Yeah, we've been hot and on the field and trying to prepare for another season, getting things together on the high school side of things so. Wait what what what wait out wait room every day get them in there we. Start every, We start every day. We do check in at 7:30, weights at 8 speed, Agility development usually about 9:00 and then skill development 10 to 10/30, 10:45 somewhere around there. So we're it's good 2 1/2, almost 3 hours every day of trying to prepare some young folks for four years of high school football.

3:28 Hoping to get one or two to play after that. Robbie let let me ask this because obviously the kids are working out, how much work are y'all doing? Like are you, are you in tape? Like basically kids leave. Are you just looking at tape from basically noon to six O clock at night? No, no, no, it, it takes a lot of, you know, well here we've got a, a brand new turf field and, you know, some stadium renovation and stuff. OK. Getting, you know, but a lot of our stuff is like you said, it's some film work, preparing some stuff, just doing grounds work around keeping their practice field ready and stuff like that. You know, we, we do things a little differently than some places.

4:17 We do a lot of laundry and things like that for the kids. We don't send stuff home with them. We don't ask the parents to, to take care of a lot of that stuff. We do a lot of that stuff on their own. Just things like that. Different plans today we worked on some just trying to get some letters sent out to different local businesses and churches and things to see if we can get some some meals for kids during game days this season, stuff like that. Little logistic things, but that's that's what a lot of the summer is I'm dealing a lot with trying to get licensure stuff finished and taking tests and getting some things like that. Since I changed my license as a teacher, I've gone from, I spent, let's see, 18 years. I spent 13 years in health and physical education and now I'm in special Ed working with their exceptional, exceptional students here and takes a lot to get that stuff going. I worked on some master's classes and doing some, some practice testing to finish that license. So got that on my plate along with all of it to you so. So it's for for you.

5:34 The offseason is mixed bag being a high school coach. Watch the kids now do do you? Are they allowed in North Carolina for the kids to organize to do 7 O sevens? Oh yeah, go out. OK, because every state's different. Like some states are weird about that shit. Some states you go do that, they'll be like they're all ineligible now. They can't play because they went out and played seven O 7 at your field. No, we have and they can do anything they want to on their own. There are certain times in the summer, there's the week of always the week of the 4th of July in North Carolina. And then there's going to be a week at the end of towards the end of July, what they call Allstate Clinic Week.

6:16 So they have all of our state rules, clinics, all of those things on that week. Those are considered dead periods. We're not allowed to have contact with the players in a, you know, from a coach's perspective, but the kids can get together and do stuff on their own however they want to. But other than those two day period weeks, you know, we can, we can work with the kids from the last day of school on through the summer, except on Sundays. All right. But I mean, we're, we're there's some limitations on amount of hours a day. There's no supposed to be no more than 3 hours a day. I think there's rules about if you do 2A day deals once the see the pre season stuff starts.

7:09 If you do with two a day, one day, you have to have so many hours in between the two, so many total hours together and there has to be a day off in between, you know, stuff like that. So it's changed a lot from the time we played where we used to, you know, go at 6:00 in the morning and we'd leave sometimes 6 or 7 at night and we'll practice however long I have many times we needed to. Yeah, them 3A days were no joke. You did you, Ron. You weren't. You never made it to the to the experience at Fort Pickett, did you? I did not. No, that was pre dated me. My freshman year, man, we, we took that trip with Larry Smith and and that crowd to Fort Pickett for the camp.

7:56 That was something different. Boy, it was just one a day, but it just was all day. Well, you're going to practice. One time long ass practice. Yeah, within that week with a with a Saturday scrimmage where we usually went and showed up and played Attlee and Hampton and we got to see all of that fun, take those butt kickings and come all back home. So. Well, wait, hold on, wait a SEC. Hampton would have been 9. Yes, exactly. So I did. I did the one like Jamboree that they had at U of R that time. You remember that one?

8:38 Yes, that would have been, I think it would have been my junior year. Yeah, I think that's right. Yeah, Hampton. Hampton was there at that one too, and they were still. Yeah. Crushing. Whipping and you had you had the the Ronald Curry's and the the ones like that from Hampton. Yeah, it was. It was quite an adventure. So those. Are what you say. See. See that? Say now I'm going down a rabbit hole here. Oh, here he comes. Pull them in here. Look at it, Sally. He had it. Shelton. Looks different. And all of his beauty and glory. Little little little, fluffy and swollen. Don't get it wrong, I'm nowhere near as smart as Shelton is. Oh yeah, you pretty good.

9:32 You make up the brunt. You make up the brute with the with what we lack in brain, I guess we're just talking about. The old school football days and how different it is now. Yes. Well, they would tell us they're talking about going to Jamboree and our little high school having to go up against Hampton High School where all those studs played Ronald Curry. I can't imagine seeing that. I mean, I can't imagine seeing. I can't imagine seeing that I've seen some good football players, but that that's next level. So the problem we had is that we were like the most rural AAA school in the whole damn state. Easily.

10:17 Easily. Absolutely. I remember my first. I remember my first varsity playing time. I was tied in. We played a school called Mcadore High School. That's what Bo Jackson went to high school at and I was 9th grader and I've seen the I was the third string tight end and I've seen the first two tight ends get knocked out of the game. Everybody on their team had gold teeth. They had they had gold teeth and goatees. I was in 9th grade. They had a kid on their team that went to Alabama. His name was Matt Caddell. He played wide receiver.

10:58 They called Mackadore Smackadore. That's how good they would they would kill people. They beat us like 56 to 0. This kid, Matt Caddill, they called him the pocket Rocket. He ran A4240 and if you kicked him the ball, he was running it back. I think he I think he had three touchdowns against us. He's the fastest person I've ever seen on the field. And I've seen Tyrone Prothrow on the field too. He was pretty fast, but Matt Caddell was the fastest human I've ever seen with a football in his hand. I. I can tell you a fast one that I've seen and y'all will know the names Mr. David Wilson. Oh yeah, I heard about that. I. Didn't have to play. Against him, that's a that's AI. Couldn't imagine seeing some of that like.

Look, that man, The last time, I think it was the last time I coached against him, I think it was a senior year, He had 260 yards rushing and five touchdowns, and I don't know how many he would have had if he'd like got thrown out in the third quarter for doing the somersault in the end zone. Yeah. Well, with something that was 15 years ago, I still didn't figured out how to stop him, right? Him landed on his neck unfortunately is what finally stopped him. I well let's get into it. What we're doing tonight couple weeks ago we did the offensive hokey dream team tonight we're going to do the defensive hokey dream team, but we got a few things to unload before we get there as always, and I want to start with basketball.

You got. F Dallas, I think that's the pronunciation officially signed. We just call him Neo. Neo, call him Neo and. The one I mean the one, the one but. Legitimately, without a shadow of a doubt, the I mean, no, no disrespect to Rodney Rice, but literally the best recruit Mike Young has ever pulled. This kid was legitimately going to get drafted somewhere in the second round of the NBA this year.

13:17 He chose to defer smart, in my opinion, because I think he's going to tear it up. So, Tally, does Mike Young have an excuse not to win games this year? Mike? Young, I'm going to give him a pass today, man, he done good today. So I'm going to just keep quiet and we're going to see what he going to do. I did see a quote where he said he said that the basketball team was just better this year. I'm like, well, I fucking hope so. But I think, I think that it will be. So we'll see. We'll see what he got. I mean, you got to have some, you got to have some some talent to play. I mean, it's not the SEC but the ACC. You got to have some talent and some length to play there. So hopefully he has that in in this year's team. I mean, I think we finally got a a good combination of enough ball handlers with a really good amount of size down low, but with most everybody still able to step out, hit the shot outside if they need to with, with an exception here or there. It's really lining up to to be definitely the most talented top to bottom we've been in the last handful of years, definitely since the the ACC Championship run. Keith.

14:41 That group, Keith alumina? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So yeah, at least the most talented since that group, at least top to bottom. I feel like you, you actually have a starting five, you feel pretty good about it. A couple guys coming off the bench that can hold their own. I don't think we really had that since then. You know, I think you got a whole lot of potential. We've got to see if they put the pieces together and that they play like a team and can win like a team. But as far as just the individual parts right now, it's definitely looking pretty good. That's what I want to see from Mike Young more than anything because a couple of those teams, 20/20/2019 right 2019-2020 1/20/21 there were times where early they just didn't they look disjointed and you looked and said, well, these are talented.

15:36 He can't have that happen this year. Like there's too much talent to have that funk of well, I got to figure out everything. No, you, you got to figure that out this year. And if not, you've got to either let Lowell attack or Neo do his thing because that kids been playing with grown ass men in the Greek league and been putting up somewhere between 7 and 10 points a game. Got looked at that the NBA and that's I think Tally you've kind of there's been numerous times in the last four years Again, we don't are we as intense on basketball as where football, no basketball lasts from October to March. It's a long way. You get too intense, you get burned out. But you've always said Tally, I'll never forget this. We just don't have a player that we literally can say here's the ball, please go get us the next 6 points, right? And I think that's where Neo, it looks like he could be that guy. It's just like he go.

16:33 Let me step back. Most of the teams that you see that are, you know, good teams have a dude like that. They can just take over the game, create his own shot, draw double teams to be able to kick the ball. I mean, Mike Young has to draw up some stuff for us to get shots off and usually we've got, you know, 6 foot guards trying to shoot over 6 foot guards on the other team. Had to get longer, had to get bigger and you had to get more talented. So seems like he's done that. So I mean, I'm, I'm hoping the best. I like watching basketball. You know, I don't dislike Mike Young, think people think I dislike him. I don't dislike him. I just, I didn't get that. I don't get the hype from nothing. Like if you if you ain't winning, you just ain't winning so. You talk about being intense in Virginia Tech basketball. I mean, I've spent the last 25 years and working everything I can in high school football.

17:27 Last thing I remember about Virginia Tech basketball is Ace Custis so. Throw it back, Riley. I'm trying. I'm trying guys. Well, basically, I think once you once November hits, you just want to go to sleep for six weeks, get home. Thanksgiving and Christmas, then I can get back to football in February. There you go. All right, let's tell Quick. We're going to hit some 2026 recruiting. Been a lot of buzz on that. Obviously everybody saw Cornell Warren decommitted, best prospect we had. And then we get Cameron Johnson, the defensive end out of green run down in down in the 7573 star guy. And then we get Cam Gillespie out of North Carolina defensive lineman.

18:13 Probably more shape it up to be AD tackle out of Mooresville High School. But as of right now, 2026 class ain't looking great. You got 4 commits. One of them's a legacy kicker. No disrespect to Will love he's I think they put him as probably the best kicker in the country. But this is usually the time where we start seeing one through a week and by July. We got 1 coming tomorrow or so everyone is saying so. Oh, OK, I don't know about. What's the kicker's name? Well, love, it's John's little brother. What you talking about man? That's the that's the best player we could have.

18:55 The best player on the team last year was who? Just the love shoot. Got the little? Brother, I'm being I'm being funny. But hey, if the if, if the love can bring the the love like this love, we want to stay with that love. So that might be. Points is points. That may be the. Best automatic from inside 50. Listen, that may be the best recruit that we have. So Mr. Love, get your little brother right. Keep him on hill. I can, I can tell you from a high school perspective, the way things have changed recently, recruiting has gotten a little weird and a little crazy from the high school side of things. And I know, I know Virginia Tech focuses a lot on high school recruiting and things like that.

19:44 And there, there's been some lag, there's been some craziness with the way some things have changed, kind of waiting for these these rulings and things to come through and figure out what they were going to do. So I wouldn't get too worked up about how it's gone thus far. And that's just my opinion from this side of it. But I mean, it's there's definitely some kids that are sitting back and waiting to see what was going to happen with those whole situations. So it may you may see a a real take off and some things coming soon I think. Yeah. I mean, when we talked about it, we're like we had the Warren decommit. We kind of knew that that wasn't firm even when it happened, right?

20:28 Like so you know, he said he was still going to take other visits. We knew that his star was rising a little bit when he committed. We knew that some of the bigger dogs in the SEC, we're going to start coming calling. Sounds like that's kind of where, where things went. So, you know, here we are. You know, it sucks losing your best commit. We move forward. We got a couple more. I said when when Warren decommitted, we got about six weeks to get at least eight more in the boat before you can start feeling like this isn't a disaster. And we got 2IN and probably getting one more tomorrow. So we're, we're on a pretty decent track since then. And it's been less than a week since I made that that tweet. So we'll see how it goes.

21:11 I'm I'm still not feeling great about the 26th class, But like I said in that tweet, I don't know, it's not time to panic, but it's definitely time to need to see some results. And so just looking forward to seeing what prime company can can kind of pull through in the home stretch here. Get like 5 get get 5 kids from high school and get dressed out of the portal because you can figure out who the hell plays high school kids. Dice roll. We're we have to face a harsh reality here too, is there is some some uneasy feelings about what's going on. You know, you got you got a new offensive system and coordinator, you got a new defensive system and coordinator, you got questions about how long do things will hold together and what's going. And that's not easy to recruit kids now when they can make money going anywhere anyway.

22:04 I mean that that's a harsh reality to it. It is, it is, and right now it isn't. Those colored glasses, I know how this works. Well, mine are getting rosier by the day. So that's the way recruiting's going. We got four in the boat. Hopefully more to come over the next month or so. Hopefully we can talk about it. I know we are working to get somebody on in July to discuss low high school recruiting. Hopefully that comes through. But real quick, before we get into our defensive drinking, Brian did were you able to make a slide for Robbie's offensive stuff or no? I was not, but Robbie, I want you to to to run through it and tell me. Tell me what you got. Lord, let.

22:45 Me talk on the quarterback. Hold up. Quarterback was was I can remember that one that was easy. That was Tyron Taylor and I you know you'd I'll I'll hear degree especially with people my age. Why wasn't Michael Vick? Hey, Michael Vick was an, they called it the Victoria experience for a reason. But when I'm putting together a whole team and I want to do, I want to run, I want to throw, I want to do it all and with the leadership and with the things like that. Tyrod Taylor just kind of did it for me. I had, I had a little bit different experience. I had a a player at the time that was being recruited that talk to him all the time.

23:33 I spent a lot of time and a couple of visits with, with the kid that I had there and I hung out with Tyrod's dad quite a bit. So I mean, I got to know the kid and and the way things work. So that's who I went with as my quarterback, my running backs. I said David Wilson, obviously Kevin Jones and Basil Tooten. I just. Me and you Robbie, me and you match for match baby speed. I just like that combination. All three of them had the speed to to break anything at any time and hit the edge, but none of the three of them were ever worried about I got to get to the edge because I'm not going through the mess in the middle.

I had Jeff King and Mr. Bucky Hodges because Bucky Hodges was a tight end and Logan Thomas was a quarterback. And if you want to fight about it, we win. Hey, we got enough of that in the comments on that. Oh, we got how you feel about that behind you on that, Logan Thomas. Yeah, he was pretty firm about that on that last show, though. He was. Going to it overall for a lifetime. Logan Thomas probably a better tight end. Logan Thomas never played sniper tight end at Virginia Tech, so I couldn't make him a tight end.

And I had Brian Steele jersey was probably the first Virginia Tech jersey I ever had. So it just kind of stuck for me. And Carol Dale is, it's old school, but Oh yeah, that name stick forever in. Virginia you'll hear it more in my in my offensive line group.

You can go in and look, you're not going to find stats with offensive lineman and stuff back then they, you know, nobody counted pancakes or stuff in their 30s, forties, 50s all those years. But they did. But they were made with flour and butter. Yeah, exactly. Something to be said about their World Championships and the pros and their longevity and the years they played. That's a different kind of different kind of mentality on the offensive line that it takes anyway. And you put some guys like that in there and we got something it'll teach the rest of those guys a little bit more grit.

I mean, it's like 40 of us that went together, you know, kids, grown-ups. At one time I started preaching in the he was in the piano bar and they asked me the same.

That drink package will make you, you know, turn you into a different beast. Man, it ain't a lot. I've tried my best to hit 15 a day. It didn't work, but I mean, I did 15. I didn't drink them all. I was giving them away, doing whatever I had to do. But it was a good trip, man. We had a great trip. We went to the Dominican Republic, we went to Puerto Rico, we went to Saint Thomas. St. Thomas is beautiful, just like a beautiful place, man. It's kind of like, you know, being a kid from Alabama and usually seeing like trees and skunks and stuff like that to go to a place like, and then like, I know what the country looks like.

I know it when you go to a place like Saint Thomas and you just look out, it's not just water because I'm not a huge water person, but just like their trees look beautiful, you know what I'm saying? Like everything is just different. You know, the sun shines a little bit different in places like that. Looks like a like a storybook man. So when we went to the Dominican Republic, we didn't go to a beach because we went to a beach at the other places. We just pretty much like walk the city and went to some shops and ate the local food and stuff like that. And that's, you know, that's that's I ain't going to say humbling because it wasn't like super bad there, but you know, to see people out hustling and selling stuff and, you know, trying to make a dollar like it just makes you appreciate what you do have.

31:46 So that was cool too, though. It was cool. It was, we had a great time. The travel lag is horrible. Wife came back with COVID. Damn, we just fucked up over here man. I got to ask one question because we got you getting drunk. The food's always good. By the way, for everyone who's never been on the cruise, especially Carnival, do not miss Maine Diamond. Ever. You better go don't. Ever miss it? Go ask Brian. He missed it one night and I can't remember what you missed, but you went somewhere else and you were like, Nope, not again. I'm not skipping the next night. I will tell you, I will tell you on the boat that we went on on the Celebration. If anybody thinking about going on a cruise, if you can get to the Celebration, go because it's got like 30 restaurants. So if you do miss Maine dining, Maine dining shoes are good, but it's so many other places to eat. Some of them you got to pay for.

32:42 But like they had a chicken place on there, like Shaq's got a chicken restaurant on there. Awesome food, You know, of course, Guys Burgers, they had a dumpling place, they had a loaded fry place, just all type of crap, man. So we didn't, I couldn't, I couldn't even get to all the places. I didn't even explore the whole ship. That's how big you can. I mean, I felt like our little ship was big and you started talking about like 30 restaurants, like 9 like 18 stories. It's like, holy shit, do they? Do the thing where they divide you like in neighborhoods and stuff too. Pretty, it feels like it. So we went to Guy Guy Fieri's got a restaurant on there called Pig and Anchor. So it's a BBQ restaurant, right?

33:24 So we go to it, it's like the last day and it's maybe 10 of us. We go to it. We didn't even know they had a whole another bar and Infinity pool and hot tubs. All this stuff was behind the restaurant and I'm like what is this? Because everything on our ship mostly was like on floor 16/17/18 something like that like this was floor 6 and they said Oh yes, pools all around there. Y'all didn't y'all ain't been back there. I'm like, well this is the last night. Yeah we ain't going tonight. So let me just enjoy this smoked chicken y'all and gave me last. Piece. Last piece What tables did you hit?

The reason that they got that big night shift is because dummies like me going to that casino and leave money there, that's what. Don't go to the casino on that. What? Smashed you? What got you? What gained? Everything, man. I mean, I ain't going to say it smashed. We did. We probably broke even because I lost money and my wife won some. She got on the slot machine and won like 450 bucks. But I lost every bit of that. Just letting you know beforehand before she did that because she only went in that one night. I kind of went in there like 3 to 4 nights, Got a little time by myself going there, play craps, lose a little bit, go back in there, play roulette, lose a little bit, play a little blackjack.

34:48 So I lost on everything. I was Virginia Tech on that boat in that casino. I was losing every game. I was losing them close. I learned from Pride. I wasn't just losing. Barely missing them too buddy. That's what was happening to me, so. Man man was getting 14 all night in blackjack. He kept hitting, kept getting 8888. Even then, he was getting 20, the dealer was getting a four card 21. You just held on to your time now. Man. I don't, I guess blackjack is the worst. Like at least crap that's assembling to luck and you feel like sometimes if you get a bad shooter, it's just like, you know, it's like, oh man, like, oh, we're going to go good here.

I'd rather hit a 7 so everybody loses then hit like freaking 5. Nobody wins 5. You ain't. I'm not winning nothing if you're betting the field on five so. Y'all talking way above my head.

Think we've seen Cam blossom a little bit more after his time at Virginia Tech, but the potential was there is how he got on my list here. Because Cam could just hit, you know? And I feel like if we put a dream team together and we had all these other people that's flowing around him and you can tell him just to go hit like he did with the Seahawks, I don't think too many people want to come across the middle.

I just Remember Remember watching both of those guys play and how they just kind of took control and and LED everything. And then Tori and Gray, I remember him a little more as a coach then as a player, but I know he was he was a player there.

Terrell Edmonds very good safety, So no hate on that, but I'm going to make a point about tally what you saw about Cam Blossom and once he got to Seattle, because everybody knows the story, right?

1:15:26 Cam start played four years. He did not red shirt. He started out as a cornerback. They moved him to Rover in 2007 where he started as a sophomore. First of all, Rover sophomore. You didn't do that shit. He had 80 tackles that year as a sophomore. His last two seasons he played at free safety. He played out of position his last two years in O8, no nines, free safety. And so that the truth is that then that's the story to be told is what if you had a true free safety and he got to play Rover, play that strong safety like he did in the NFL those last two years when he got bigger and he got stronger, He wouldn't win in a sixth round. He would not have went late in the draft. He would have been like the first safety off the board. Yeah, and and he was my first theme out of out of There along with Kashawn Jarrett like that.

Seemed like every year he played against Georgia Tech and they moved him around to different position, he was jumping over the line. I see some people putting in the chat, but it's so many names. I guess the first name that I left off that I really wanted all was J Ron Hosley. Like I used to love to watch him play, but I just didn't have room to slide it on above anybody that I have.

I think he really, he got to the NFL, but short a little bit and became just one hell of a player over the over the course of his career. Then we got, I mean, Macho. Macho was my guy, man. Macho was probably my favorite personal favorite Virginia Tech cornerback just I mean, played hard nosed, played with a chip on his shoulder, brought the energy, brought the juice, but also produced and and was just as versatile, at least in the same ballpark as D Hall from an athletic standpoint.

Brandon Flowers I mean, Brandon was everything you wanted. A quarterback he could cover. He picked balls off, but he also knocked the living piss out of you if you gave him the chance.

And Tyrone Drakeford, that's old school. That's he graduated in 93. He got drafted by the 49ers in 94. That was about the time I was coming on as a fan of both so he stuck with me. He's also I believe second in picks. He had a 7th pick season. He had like A5 pick season. A real OG DBU Look him up. Damn good player, but we are missing so many people here.
